Life is Like an Orange

Life is like an orange.

Life is like an orange.

Oranges come in a few varieties. But the varieties are all quite similar in most respects.

Its outer surface is dimpled and orange in colour, not just in name. It doesn’t start off that colour, but it matures into its namesake hue from its original green.

No doubt, its eventual colour is how it got its name. Or, possibly, how the colour got its name. I really don’t have a clue. So, scratch that “no doubt” part.

The thickness of the skin varies from orange to orange.

Peel off the dimpled exterior and you see a considerably less-rough interior sphere. Even without its peel, the fruit is still orange-coloured, but the inner orb is veined with random, off-white rind hangers-on.

Naturally Sectioned, but Not Segregated

The fruit is naturally sectioned. But it’s not segregated.

It may have seeds or not. Not having seeds is rather weird if you consider it from a reproduction standpoint.

It is usually succulent, but it can sometimes be dry and flavourless. When not bland, it is usually sweet, but occasionally tart.

Oranges don’t all share the same lot in life. They can be eaten as is, squeezed into juice, included in a fruit salad, turned into marmalade, or used as an ingredient in an appetizing dish. Or they may fall from the tree and rot on the ground. Or a non-human animal may eat it without permission off the tree or off the ground.

Orange Skin: Useful, but Usually Not.

The skin is often discarded without a thought, but it can also be used as a garnish or as animal feed.

When it is turned into juice, its pulp can be included or filtered out.

It is a member of the citrus genus. In addition to usually sweet oranges, the citrus genus includes such normally tart members as lemons and limes.

They don’t like frost and they may become damaged if left unprotected when a frost hits while they are still on the tree.

An orange is … Oh wait. Come to think of it, life isn’t very much like an orange, is it? Apart from a certain President of the United States who shall remain tasteless, most people don’t start out another colour and then turn orange. I noted a few vague similarities above. But, let’s face it. They are stretches of epic proportions.

I don’t know where I was going with this. I’ve never been any good at metaphors, analogies or similes. Never mind. Go back to whatever you were doing. I’m sorry for wasting your time.
